In this issue: High-Quality Marriages Help To Calm Nerves
A University of Virginia neuroscientist has found that women under stress who hold their husbands' hands show signs of immediate relief as verified by their brain scans.

"This is the first study of the neurological reactions to human touch in a threatening situation, and the first study to measure how the brain facilitates the health-enhancing properties of close social relationships," says Dr. James A. Coan, author of the study, which is published in the December 2006 issue of the journal Psychological Science.

“What does that mean?”   Lets look more closely:

The results showed a large decrease in the brain response to threat as a function of spouse handholding, and a limited decrease in this response as a function of stranger handholding.

Moreover, spouse handholding effects varied as a function of marital quality, with women in the very highest quality marriages benefiting from a very powerful decrease in threat-related brain activity, including a strong decrease in the emotional (affective) component of the brain's pain processing circuits.

The strength of your marriage can therefore have more impact on your well-being than just the day to day interactions of people living together in a relationship.

Illness, infidelity, sex, anger, communication problems — all can contribute to distress in relationships. Couples counseling can help resolve conflicts and heal wounds.

Relationship counseling, also called couples therapy, helps couples understand and resolve conflicts or improve their relationship. Relationship counseling gives couples the tools to communicate better, negotiate differences, problem solve and even argue in a healthier way.

The essence of relationship is the space that exists between two people -- that invisible bridge -- that place where we meet. Learning how to best honor, nurture, and keep that space free of distress is essential in love, business and play. Most people don't think twice about taking lessons to become better at what they care about: golf, computer, music, tennis, financial management, and other things. Relationships deserve and need that same kind of energy and commitment. Investing in your "relationship intelligence" can pay enormous dividends for you and the people your life touches.

How Couples Counseling Can Help

I invite you and your partner to call for a free consultation to discuss your situation and begin the journey to healthier, happier relationship.

  • Improve communication - wouldn't it be great if you could both learn to understand and really listen to each other?
  • Learn new ways to resolve old disagreements and fights. Stop the cycle of blame and hurt.
  • Decide if your relationship is the right one for you. Understand the influence past relationships may have on your current relationship.
  • Learn how to accept and appreciate your differences. Grow closer together.
  • Learn the things you were never taught, about how to make your relationship something to treasure.
