In this issue: Reducing Anxiety and Stress through Living Mindfully

An opportunity to learn powerful methods for dealing with physical and emotional stress and pain.”

Learn to actively participate in your health and well being and change your body’s reaction to stress. Stress has a profound effect on our basic physical health. Studies have found emotional states related to our perceived stress levels, such as optimism, pessimism, anxiety, alienation and happiness, can effect our overall physical health as much as obesity or physical fitness.

I invite you to embark on an 8-week journey of self-development, self-discovery, learning and healing.

The program is based on the systematic training of mindfulness, a meditation form originally developed in the Buddhist tradition of Asia over 2500 years ago. The program asks you to make a strong commitment to daily home meditation and exercises (30-45 minutes/day) during the course. Two decades of published research on mindfulness meditation and over 16,000 participants have reported:

Ability to cope more effectively with both short and long-term stressful situations

    Increased ability to relax

    Improved self-esteem

Reduced pain levels and enhanced ability to cope with pain that doesn’t go away

Greater energy and enthusiasm for life

The course is meant to enhance, not to compete with, pharmacological and psychotherapeutic treatment for anxiety and depression. The aim is to enhance your ability to participate in therapy and to expand the envelope of care into the future by teaching participants to mindfully disengage from distressing or anxious moods and negative thoughts. The course integrates mindfulness practice into a cognitive-behavioral psychological model of anxiety and uses specific exercises to bring mindfulness and concentration to bear in stressful situations.

Class starts May 17 and meets on Thursday evenings from 7 to 9 PM in my Dupont Circle office. Tuition is $425* which includes 8 class sessions, meditation tapes, and course materials.

*My goal is to make the program available to those who could benefit without regard to ability to pay, therefore sliding scale fees are available based on income and scholarships will be considered.
